What is TMJ Disorder?
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a hinge that connects your jaw to the temporal bones of your skull. It lets you move your jaw up and down and side to side so you can talk and eat.
TMJ disorder (or TMD) refers to pain in your jaw which can be caused by the jaw joint not functioning properly. If left untreated, it can lead to chronic pain, bone loss, gum tissue changes and loose teeth.
This disorder is often caused by misalignment of the teeth and/or jaw. Other factors that may contribute to the development of this disorder include trauma to the jaw area, wear and tear over time, teeth grinding or clenching, genetics, and airway issues.
