Why Teeth Become Discoloured
You may notice that your teeth just aren’t as white as they used to be. Over time, aging, accidents, and certain pigmented foods and beverages can dull the appearance of enamel.
Tooth discolouration and staining ultimately break down into two groups: intrinsic and extrinsic factors.
Intrinsic discolouration can be caused by trauma or medication and typically can't be addressed with teeth whitening. To hide these types of discoloration, you may want to consider dental bonding or veneers.
Extrinsic stains can be caused by environmental factors such as smoking cigarettes, drinking coffee, etc., and can often be treated with teeth whitening.
Teeth Whitening to Fit Your Lifestyle
Our goal is to help you achieve a whiter, brighter smile, your way. That's why we offer in-office and at-home teeth whitening options at Ocean Dental. No matter where you are, your future smile is bright.
How Can Teeth Whitening Benefit You?
Teeth whitening offers oral health benefits that go beyond just whitening your teeth.
You may find that you experience an overall boost in confidence. Many of our patients also find that having whiter teeth makes them feel more inclined to keep up with their oral hygiene so that they can maintain their results for longer.
What Happens During Teeth Whitening?
Our dentists use a non-toxic, non-allergenic peroxide-based gel for teeth whitening treatments. This gel breaks down stain molecules, which can result in a whiter, brighter-looking smile.
Teeth whitening is not a one-size-fits-all treatment, and not every shade of white will be a good match. Your dental professional will help you choose the right shade for your teeth.
Teeth Whitening Options
At Ocean Dental, you can choose from in-office or take-home teeth whitening to lighten the colour of your teeth whichever way works best for your busy schedule.
In-Office Teeth Whitening
We offer an in-office option that can safely and effectively whiten your teeth. Your dentist will start by applying a barrier around your gums to protect them, and then apply a thin layer of whitening gel to each tooth. Once your teeth whitening treatment is done, you should see a noticeable change in the shade of your teeth.
Personalized Take-Home Teeth Whitening
We offer the option to whiten your teeth in the comfort of your own home. If you choose the take-home whitening option, we will make impressions of your mouth and create custom whitening trays. While at home, you will apply a whitening gel to these trays and wear them according to your dentist's directions. By the end of treatment, you may find yourself flashing your whitened smile to everyone you meet.
FAQs About Teeth Whitening
Learn more about what our patients are asking about the teeth whitening services offered at Ocean Dental.
-
How long do the effects of teeth whitening last?
While teeth whitening can make a noticeable difference to the look of your teeth, the effects are not permanent. Beverages such as coffee and wine, and certain foods, such as tomato-based sauces, can cause stains on your teeth.
With daily oral hygiene and being mindful of what you eat and drink, you can help extend the effects of your whitening treatment. Many people find that they only need a touch-up about once a year.
-
Does insurance cover the cost of teeth whitening?
Teeth whitening is not typically covered by standard dental insurance plans. You may need to speak with your insurance provider to learn more about what is covered under your policy.
-
Does teeth whitening make teeth more sensitive?
Some people may find that their teeth or gums are mildly sensitive immediately following teeth whitening. This discomfort should go away within a few days.
To minimize any discomfort, your dentist may recommend that you use an anti-sensitivity toothpaste before treatment, and for at least two weeks after your treatment.
-
Do teeth whitening products work on all stains?
Not all stains can be removed with teeth whitening. Brown and yellow stains are most easily lightened, but some other types of discolouration may not be altered at all.
If having a whiter smile is important to you but your teeth have stains that cannot be removed, your dentist may recommend other treatment options such as dental crowns or veneers that may be a better fit for you.
-
Does teeth whitening work on dental restorations?
Unfortunately, teeth whitening can only change the colour of natural teeth, and will not have any effect on the colour of dental crowns or veneers.
If you require any type of dental restoration you should speak to your dentist about having your teeth whitened beforehand.
-
Will teeth whitening damage my tooth enamel?
When used under the supervision of a qualified dentist, teeth whitening is not likely to damage your teeth. Always consult with your dentist to ensure you are using teeth whitening products safely.
If you experience any pain, sensitivity, or discomfort anywhere in your mouth, contact your dentist right away for an examination.
