Surgical Solutions for Oral Health Issues
Oral surgery refers to the surgical treatment of injuries and defects of the face, mouth, teeth and jaws. While routine dental care, along with brushing and flossing, can help protect your smile, unexpected oral health issues can happen.
Extensive tooth damage or decay, jaw bone deterioration, advanced periodontal (gum) disease and traumatic injuries can leave you needing surgery. These cannot improve on their own and are too advanced for other, less invasive treatment options.
If we are recommending oral surgery, we will make sure that you are fully informed about your options and we will provide you with a detailed treatment plan. We will also explain each step of the procedure to you.
We also offer oral sedation to help you feel more comfortable during your procedure.
Dental Implants
A dental implant is a small titanium screw that functions like a natural tooth root. Our dentists place dental implants as part of the process to replace a missing tooth to assist in restoring your smile. A dental implant, together with a tooth replacement such as a crown or bridge, looks and feels much like a natural tooth.
Tooth Extractions
There are a variety of reasons why you may need to have a tooth removed. These can include severe gum infections, advanced tooth decay and overcrowding of other teeth. In cases where bone or gum tissue is deficient or diseased, we may recommend removing and replacing these tissues as well to help enhance both your health and the aesthetics of your smile.
Wisdom Tooth Removal
As you enter adulthood, your final set of molars, or wisdom teeth, will erupt in the back corners of your mouth. While they can grow in without causing issues, there are many cases where they need to be removed surgically. If the wisdom teeth are causing pain or crowding of other teeth, your dentist may recommend having them extracted.
Bone Grafting
A jaw bone must have enough support for a dental implant to be successful. If you are considering implants, but don't have enough jaw bone density to support them, this procedure can add bone or other materials to the affected area. This will then take several months to heal before a dental implant can be placed.
Sinus Lifts
A sinus lift is a procedure that is given to patients who may require extra bone to be added to the upper jaw by the molars in order to support a dental implant. You may need a sinus lift if you are looking to have missing teeth replaced but have experienced bone loss through periodontal (gum) disease or if you have had long-term tooth loss caused by injury.
Gum Grafts
A gum graft is a procedure where gum tissue is taken from the roof of the mouth and transplanted onto another area of the gums. To help protect your oral health, a gum graft can be used to cover exposed tooth roots, repair receding gums, and reduce associated symptoms such as severe tooth sensitivity or eventual tooth loss.
