“It's a smile, it's a kiss, it's a sip of wine ... it's summertime!” ― Kenny Chesney

“it's a smile, it's a kiss, it's a sip of wine ... it's summertime!” ― Kenny Chesney... How poetic, and more importantly that Kenny Chesney recognized it is the smile that comes first.

Your smile says a lot about you. How does your smile make you feel? What would you change if you could? Let us tell you a true story from Ocean Dental.

Once upon a time there was a lady of about 75 years of age who came to our office for a routine exam and cleaning but did not smile. It made us wonder: is she afraid, maybe she had suffered great loss, maybe she was in pain, perhaps she had financial difficulties. All we really knew was that she came for her appointment as scheduled, paid her bill promptly, booked the next appointment with the doctor, and left. Without smiling! This for us is very upsetting, we are here to make people smile.

What the doctor did notice during his examination was that there were a number of areas of concern such as decayed teeth, crowded teeth and discolored fillings on her front teeth.  When she came for her next visit the doctor asked: How do you feel about your smile. She replied, “I hate it, it’s ugly.”  She advised us that in fact her grandchildren had never seen her smile, she hated the look of those old fillings on the front teeth. Our first thought: tragic that someone goes through life not smiling because they hate the look of their teeth. When asked what if anything she would like to do about her smile she was surprised to hear that there were options, and we discussed them with her.

Our patient proceeded to set up a plan with the doctor, who provided her with the care she had not received previously and created a beautiful smile for her. It allowed the beautiful person on the inside to shine through and present to the world the wonderful woman she really was.

What is your smile saying about you?
